Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about our Equine Assisted Learning programs
Do I need to know how to ride horses?
No, you do not need to have any prior experience with horses. Our Equine Assisted Learning programs are conducted on the ground; there is no riding involved. The activities focus on interacting with horses through groundwork exercises.
Is Equine Assisted Learning the same as horseback riding lessons?
No, Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is very different from horseback riding lessons. EAL uses horses as teachers to help humans learn about themselves and develop life skills. All activities take place on the ground (no riding), and the focus is on personal growth and development rather than horsemanship skills.
What should I wear?
Dress for the weather and wear closed-toe shoes or boots. Avoid loose or flapping clothing that might spook the horses. You may get dirty, so wear comfortable clothes that you do not mind getting a bit dusty. We recommend layers as the weather can change and the temperature in the barn may be different from outside.
How many people are in a typical group?
Group sizes vary depending on the program, but typically range from 6-12 participants. We can accommodate both smaller and larger groups with advance notice. Corporate and team-building programs can be customized to your specific group size.
Are the programs suitable for children?
Yes, we offer age-appropriate programs for children and youth. Our youth programs focus on developing social skills, self-confidence, emotional regulation, and teamwork. We recommend children be at least 8 years old to participate, but exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis.
Is Equine Assisted Learning the same as Equine Therapy?
While similar, they are different approaches. Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) focuses on educational and personal development goals, using horses to teach life skills. Equine Assisted Therapy is typically conducted by licensed mental health professionals and focuses on therapeutic treatment goals. At Talking Horse, we specialize in EAL programs.
Do you offer private sessions?
Yes, we offer private individual and family sessions. These can be scheduled by contacting us directly. Private sessions allow for a more personalized experience and can be tailored to address specific goals or challenges.
What if I'm afraid of horses?
Many participants start with some apprehension around horses. Our facilitators are experienced in helping people feel comfortable and safe around the horses. We never force interaction, and we find that most peoples fear diminishes as they learn about horse behavior and experience the horses' gentle nature. The programs often help people overcome their fears in a supportive environment.
